What community occupational therapy involves

Community OT roles are built around the places where people live, not the clinic. Clinicians visit homes, community health centres, supported accommodation, and outreach sites to assess how someone manages daily tasks, what equipment or modifications would help, and which services need to be coordinated. Caseloads often include older adults, people with disability, and families with complex needs.

The work is broad and social: housing, transport, access, carer capacity, and funding all shape the plan. Community OTs work closely with GPs, nursing, social work, support coordinators, and local councils. Strong documentation and the ability to make decisions with limited information are essential, because you may be the only OT the person sees.

Community OT pay and conditions

Community OT salaries typically range from $80,000 to about $112,000 depending on experience and sector. Public health and not-for-profit providers often offer salary packaging, a fleet vehicle or travel allowance, and paid professional development. Some roles include an on-call component or outreach travel to regional communities.

Travel is the biggest practical difference from clinic work. Ask whether travel time is paid, how visits are scheduled across a region, what vehicle is provided, and how many visits make up a full day. A sustainable community role builds in time for notes and follow-up rather than expecting clinicians to absorb it after hours.

What to check before you apply

Look for a clear supervision structure, a manageable travel radius, and administrative support for bookings and equipment orders. If the role serves a specific community, ask about interpreter access, cultural safety training, and how the team works with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients and communities.

Community experience is highly transferable to NDIS, aged care, and hospital discharge roles, and it is often a stepping stone into clinical leadership. Browse live community OT vacancies below, or set up a job alert for your state and caseload preference.
